The shoulder is not a simple joint but should be called as shoulder complex since its movement depends on the mobility of three bones and of course numerous vertebrae. The glenohumeral joint is much more similar to a golf ball on a golf tee. It requires muscular strength and coordination to keep the humeral head or golf ball in its proper position on the glenoid or golf tee. That’s why we mean to say that for a pain felt in the shoulder, actual joint might not be the source of symptoms.
At Healing touch Physical therapy, we perform a thorough evaluation and let you know about the source of your symptoms on the first day of your visit.
It could be from your neck!
The C5 nerve root exits the spine between two of your lower neck bones, and it is the main communication line to three shoulder muscles. Repeated or sustained neck flexion (forward bending) can put pressure on this nerve. If you compress or irritate the C5 nerve root, you are unable to efficiently control the glenohumeral joint because of muscle weakness.
